If you’re getting started with your kitchen remodeling project, measuring for your new kitchen cabinets is a task that should be done correctly. The last thing you want to do is spend time and money on new kitchen cabinets only to find out they don’t fit in the space! Here are the steps you need to know:
Step 1: Measure your cabinets and draw a diagram.
Begin by measuring your existing cabinets’ height, width, and depth. We recommend using a digital camera to get measurements right the first time. This is very important because your new cabinets will be installed where your old ones were, so it’s critical that you get this step right! If you don’t feel comfortable making these measurements yourself, ask someone to help you.
When you’re finished, go back over all your measurements again to be sure they are correct because this is the first step toward ordering new cabinets that fit correctly into your space! To start things off on the right foot, it’s crucial that you have an accurate drawing of your existing kitchen layout. Use a photo of your kitchen, or if that’s not available, sketch the cabinets in pencil on any spare piece of paper you might have.
Step 2: Measure the distance between your cabinets.
Measure the spaces between all of your cabinets (the width). Be sure to measure the inside edge to the inside edge, not the outside edge to the outer edge. You don’t want to include any trim or molding in these measurements because you’ll deal with this when installing the new cabinets. And definitely ignore any wainscoting or chair rail!
Step 3 – Don’t forget to measure the ceiling height.
It’s easy to forget that the cabinet height goes all the way up to your ceiling. Measure from the top of the countertops to the bottom of the cabinets and add 1″ for clearance. This will help you get the right height for your cabinets.
Step 4: It’s essential to measure all kitchen windows and doors.
This is just as important! If the kitchen window is installed in the middle of a wall, you’ll need to know this before ordering your new cabinets. Likewise, measure all door openings (even if they are closed)! It is also helpful to know where your outlets are located.
Step 5: Draw a floor plan for your new cabinets.
Use the measurements you’ve taken for your new cabinets and draw a diagram showing where each cabinet will fit. Do this on paper before you place an order because if one of the dimensions changes, it could affect all the other cabinets that fit around it!
This is also an excellent opportunity to think about whether or not any appliances such as dishwashers, microwaves, or ovens will fit into the space you’ve measured. You don’t want to forget these appliances and find out they don’t fit once your kitchen is torn apart!
Step 6: Double-check your measurements with a tape measure.
Now that you’ve taken accurate measurements of your existing kitchen, it’s time to double-check them with a tape measure. This will ensure that you have precise measurements for your new cabinets and make sure they fit!
Again, be sure to measure from the inside of one space to another (not from the outside edge), and remember there may be molding between spaces.
